Pebble mill care home

Total Regen was appointed to complete the groundworks and deep drainage for The BUPA care home at Pebble Mill, which forms part of the multimillion pound Edgbaston Medical Quarter. This development is located on the 27-acre Pebble Mill site, previously occupied by the BBC Crèche site within their former television studios in Birmingham.

The project involved the design and build of a 62-bed ensuite residential dementia care home. The L-shaped building provides a range of services including long and short-term care for elderly and dementia sufferers. The facilities include ancillary communal areas, dining areas, family areas, medical/therapy rooms, cinema, activity suites, and a hair salon. The scheme also featured secure gardens, external landscaping, on-site parking, and a roof garden on the second floor.

Varying materials were used for the external finishes of the building, including natural slate hangings, brick, timber cladding, and render. The construction is steel-framed with pre-cast concrete stairs and landings.

At Total Regen, we believe in going the extra mile to maintain great relationships with all stakeholders. As part of our commitment to community engagement, we organised school activities to connect with the local community. For the Pebble Mill project, we engaged with a local school to build and bury a time capsule under the foundations of the care home. We also ran classroom construction competitions, teaching the children the essential qualities needed on a construction site, along with the importance of collaboration and teamwork.

Supported by the National Federation of Builders, we were able to demonstrate the latest technologies to the children, including BIM (Building Information Modelling), through the use of Virtual Reality goggles. This hands-on experience allowed the children to explore the world of construction in an interactive and educational way.

The project commenced on site in September 2016 and Pebble Mill opened its doors to residents in March 2018.
