Sleeperz hotel groundworks overview
The Sleeperz Hotel Groundworks project involved the construction of a remarkable six-storey pre-cast concrete framed hotel on the former site of Network Rail’s Parcel Sorting Office. The unique challenge of this project was the limited space available, as the site was bordered by Newcastle Central Station and Westgate Road, a major east-to-west thoroughfare through the city.
To overcome this constraint, an off-site pre-fabricated panel system was utilised for the construction of the building. This approach allowed for efficient assembly and minimized disruption to the surrounding area. The collaboration and close co-operation with all stakeholders were crucial in ensuring that access for Network Rail personnel, the general public, and two adjacent tenants was maintained throughout the entire construction process.
The ground floor of the hotel features retail outlets and a reception area, while the five upper floors house a total of 98 beautifully designed bedrooms. One of the standout features of the hotel is its rooftop viewing deck, which offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city. This elevated space provides a unique vantage point for guests to admire the surrounding urban landscape.
The completion of the Sleeperz Hotel Groundworks in January 2012 marked a significant achievement. The building’s architectural excellence was recognized by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) when it received the prestigious Hadrian Award for Architectural Excellence in 2012. This accolade positioned the hotel as one of the finest new buildings in Northern England, showcasing the exceptional craftsmanship and innovative design.
